Three star review, originally posted here on November 15th, 2024.
I’ve read a decent amount of books about our recent political landscape. I’ve ready several Trump books. And I’m pretty engaged to with political news and analysis. I hit points where I think there’s no added benefit of reading yet another book that tells me all the same information I’ve already gleaned elsewhere. But then, from time to time, for whatever reason, a book comes along where I think “ok, maybe this one has something new or different to say.” Then I read the book, and usually I was wrong, and there’s nothing new, and all I’m doing is handing a bunch of money to someone who can profit from Trump’s existence by complaining about it.
I don’t know what made me think this book would be different. I think I saw it recommended on Reddit or a comments section somewhere, and people said Maddow’s narration was superb, and I am a fan of Maddow and her delivery, so I jumped on it. But naw… there’s nothing new here. If you haven’t been paying any attention to America’s fucked up politics for the past decade or so, then yeah, ok, maybe this is worth a read. But otherwise, it’s just preaching to the choir. I guess the man benefit is to just take the Republican lies and organize them all into one big Chronicle of Lies so that we have them in one place. So that’s good.
I’m giving this a neutral 3 star rating because it does do a decent job explaining it’s subject matter. But I can’t get too excited about it because it didn’t bring anything new to the table, and it read like a million books I’ve read before.
