Five star review, originally posted here on November 20th, 2024.
This book has been sitting on my Amazon wish list for several years, but nobody ever bought it for me. I finally got sick of waiting and goshdarnit, I wish I hadn’t waited so long. This book was great, and frankly better than I’d expected. I thought it would be a pretty literal illustration of the Constitution- basically just the word-for-word text of the document with some illustrations. Instead, this is a paraphrased synopsis (with illustrations, of course). I really appreciated that it didn’t just list the elements of the document, but also explained the history and reasoning behind each section. There was also plenty of context explaining the implications and interpretations of some of the more consequential sections. This book was also the perfect length- long enough to get into the details, but short enough that you can cram in some constitutional knowledge pretty quickly. This should be essential reading for every American (especially those who claim to “love the Constitution” but probably don’t couldn’t list anything beyond the 1st two amendments.)
