Four Star review, originally posted here on August 11, 2014.
As soon as I started reading I understood why this memoir had been such a huge hit when it came out years ago. McCourt is a fantastic storyteller, and you really get sucked into his world. But I can’t quite give it 5 stars because it does get very repetitive. I’m not sure how many times we have to be reminded that dad drank away the dole, or that teenaged Frankie really likes masturbating. I understand repeating these things to a certain extent so we can feel the same helpless frustration that the characters must be feeling, but McCourt goes just a little bit overboard. Otherwise, this book is spectacular.
