Goodreads Review: Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach

Five star review, originally posted here on March 10, 2021.

This book is 100% perfection. This was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. And my most recent books have been by Mary Shelly, Barack Obama, and Jack London!

I am not joking. I am not exagerrating. It was great.

This is the perfect example of compelling non-fiction. Roach picked a less-than-popular topic and explored the heck out of it. It is absolutely jam-packed with seriously fascinting information. Every minute I learned like 20 news things. I was listening to the audiobook while out walking around, and couldn’t stop myself from exclaiming and reacting aloud in a crowd at each new revelation or historical shocker. It also never got boring, tedious, or overwhelming. And Roach’s delivery is perfect; she walks a tighrope between being informative and being entertaining in a manner I’ve never seen before. She’s like Bill Bryson, but even better because she doesn’t come across as a condescending dick. She comes across as soemone who I absolutely want to hang out with and be friends with.

Read. This. Book. Right. Now.
