Four star review, originally posted here on December 23, 2021.
Wow. Just wow. This book was soooo funny. It’s amazing how well humor and wit can age. Did everything in the book hold up? No, of course not. But so much of it did.
I do have one complaint, though. I feel like a big dum dum whenever I have this thought, but goshdarnit, I can’t keep this inside anymore! I have to be true to myself. I have a confession…
I think no book should be this dang long.
Long books are freaking crazy.
Like, look… I know that most people read significantly faster than me. Like…. WAY faster than me. So this isn’t as big of a deal for everyone else as it is for me. But still… it takes some super ego to believe that your book is SO DANG GOOD that it is deserving of so many hours, days, weeks, even months of someone’s time. Even the very best material just never needs to be dragged out that long. So… this book is just too long. It took me soooo long to finish, and I wound up zoning out for way too much of it because I just couldn’t stay focused for all of it.
But when I WAS paying attention, it was freaking phenomenal! No wonder it’s a classic. Also, the audiobook version I listened to (Audible classics I think?) was VERY well acted, which definitely helped.
